Crystal Renn appears on the cover of the June 2010 issue of Glamour alongside Alessandra Ambrosio, and Brooklyn Decker. The headline to the cover story photographed by Matthias Vriens-McGrath in St. Barts declares, “Sexy! We’ve got the best swimsuits for every body…Size 2, Size 12, Whatever!”

Crystal leads the editorial that turns the conventional swimwear feature on its head. We’ve seen Alessandra Ambrosio wearing next to nothing for Victoria’s Secret for years, we’ve seen the flawless Brooklyn Decker in Sports Illustrated‘s Swimsuit Edition, but seeing plus model Crystal kick off the story wearing a Zimmermann one-piece and Christian Roth sunglasses in an unpatronizing manner is an act heretofore unseen. What’s so striking about the Glamour cover story is not that it’s not a mere reprise of the “size issues” that have done the rounds of fashion magazines of late, but that Crystal’s right there with the best of the best no matter the size.

Asked by Glamour if there is indeed a movement to use models of all sizes, Crystal is emphatic in responding, “I absolutely believe so. Even Prada showed curvier models this spring.” And why not? If Crystal, Alessandra, and Brooklyn can share the odd cover of Glamour, then the possibilities are limitless.

  1. She doesn’t look any different than them, really. I’m thrilled she looks so great. I just miss when she was actually a plus size model, and not a skinny person who’s not a size 0 so is considered plus size. She’s thin, just not stick thin. That makes me sad a little. I liked when I could relate to her better.

  2. I actually agree, and I’m a huge Crystal fan. I miss when she was bigger. I saw her (and still see her) as a sort of voice for curvier women. I’m glad that she is healthy and beautiful, but she was so beautiful regardless. But the same as Sarah (comment above), I could relate to her better when she was different.

  3. I like this pix see different sizes…the pix are all retouched that’s why they look awesome. It is impressive when you see the original and then retouch (from size 2 -12 as well).

As I said the runways I prefer to see size 2-4 not 12 sorry Christal.

  4. She’s in a bikini and a plus model? I love Crystal but I find that odd. Maybe it was retouched but I wonder if she’s lost weight too?

  5. Finally! It’s not just ‘plus size’ or just ‘skinny’ models. There needs to be a variety of body types if we want everyone to be happy and feel good. This is progress (: I like how she talks about variety not JUST plus size models, which is what most of them. Everyone has a different body so it isn’t fair to say real women eat on a regular basis/have curves/are plus size, etc.

  6. i guess , as a woman who has tried to model at 5’8 130lbs and told i was too fat i really appreciate some one who says “ENOUGH”. I’m so sick of starving and doing unatural things to be the stigma starving model, a model should be someone REAL not dying! if you are so thin you dont get your monthly how can you possible be proud to me a role model to girls and women who read the things your in? o, and as far as Crystal being plus size thats completely laughable , she is perfect , wonderful,REAL and beautiful!!!! I really hope that i can find that courage , to just be me , healthy , happy and free from always worrying about be considered BIG! Truth be told when you see these so called models in person , you just want to feed them , they look like death ! i really love Crystal and as far as i’m concerned she’s got the best body in hollywood . work it girl!!!!

  7. To those who commented that Crystal looks same as the other two skinny ones I have to calm you down, because that’s only on the cover page where she looks like the other two. I haven’t seen the magazine but If you look the photos from the process of shooting, when they’re wearing white swim wear on the beach, you’ll see how MUCH difference is between Crystal and the other two girls. She’s MUCH more curvier. so girls stay confident. :))
