There is no question that VMAN 26 is all about summer and its three months of revelry, what with newly minted Spider-Man Andrew Garfield on the cover and all, but the final story in the menswear quarterly’s latest issue has an eye on the autumn months to come. Photographed by Nathaniel Goldberg this Jay Massacret-styled fall menswear story titled “Menswear’s Daredevils” features Ford Men all-stars Adrien Brunier, Aiden Andrews, Brennen Steines, and Sam Bennett. The quartet dons looks from Lanvin to Raf Simons, with a black-wigged Aiden (Slide 8) pairing the former with squarish eyeglasses from General Eyewear London and New Balance sneakers. Sam opens the story (Slide 1) in distinctive British fashion wearing an ensemble by Burberry Prorsum. Turn the page (Slide 3), an arching Adrien takes a lengthy pull on a cigarette wearing a suit and cap by Giorgio Armani. Brennen’s hair is given the Kid of Kid ’n Play fame treatment (Slide 7) by the story’s hair stylist Duffy, which appropriately enough complements a graphic shirt and kilt combo from Comme des Garçons. This story is surely the stuff of daredevils whose reckless abandon promises a stylish fall season ahead.

When Jon Paul (Ford Men) isn’t busy modeling, then it is a near certainty that he is strumming chords on his Fender Jaguar for the massive audience he has assembled on YouTube. This week, however the accomplished bassist has gotten the proverbial band back together and released a new music video directed by Max Williamson for the song “If You Want To.” This is the first song recorded by Jon Paul’s new band called Basic Vacation whose sugary hooks wouldn’t at all be out of place on a triple bill with electropoppers Passion Pit and MGMT. Lydia Willemina Collins (Ford) features for the Zimmermann Resort 2012 campaign by photographer Simon Lekias and fashion stylist Tamila Purvis. Fashion Star (NBC) reportedly concluded its inaugural season Tuesday night by crowning Kara Laricks winner. The Kansas native who taught fourth grade for a decade before diving into fashion is now the proud holder of three exclusive signature collections at H&M, Macy’s, and Saks Fifth Avenue. The success, however has not gone to Laricks’s head. “My goal is not to be a celebrity. Being on television, people really feel as though they connect with you and they probably buy something to have a small piece of you. But to be a designer, the talent needs to be there to back the image up. I know many celebrities will agree to put their name on a label. I wanted to be a designer.” [WWD]

French filmmaker Jacques Audiard presented his film Rust and Bone starring Marion Cotillard at Festival de Cannes. Peter Bradshaw of the Guardian reckons the film is a “contender” for real prizes not least of which is best actress for Cotillard, winner of the 2007 Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of Édith Piaf in La Vie en Rose. Sara Marchiori (Ford+) attended the Ford+ Open Call Spring 2012 on May 5 and was signed the very same day. The native of Venice, Italy moved to New York two years ago to attend college. Following encouragement from friends Sara decided to give modeling a shot and just in time for the Ford+ open call. Today Sara came to the agency for the first time since signing to have digitals taken and embrace this new career of hers. In this video she speaks with news editor Damien Neva about this exciting new chapter of her life.

Ranya Mordanova (Ford) features in the Marie Claire Italia giugno 2012 all-black cover story by photographer David Slijper. Titled “Black Gym” the Ivanna Spernicelli-styled editorial does exactly what it says on the tin and in this Olympic season is worthy of superlative marks for technical difficulty and execution. Looking at the Russian model’s lithe physique and black bob cut with electric blue highlights it is difficult not to think of Rooney Mara’s Lisbeth Salander. Our story’s assassin opens (Slide 2) wearing an asymmetric swimsuit with a ring at the shoulder by IUIU, an ornate jeweled gold belt by Yves Saint Laurent, nylons by Calzedonia, stilettos by Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, and flexing a pair of one kilogram dumbbells. Ranya comes to rest on the story’s final page (Slide 13) wearing a bikini with torchon lace and charm-lock by Calzedonia, a viscose skirt with mesh basque by Hakaan, and various bracelets and rings by Natalia Brilli, Gucci, and Cartier. David Slijper’s series provides a different accent to the athletic stories of late, but in its service as a cover story featuring Ranya Mordanova nevertheless transforms this black gym to gold.

WWD has sifted through hundreds and hundreds of new designers to pick the best of the lot from New York to Nigeria. Today the industry daily profiles seven such under-the-radar design labels to watch including Maki Oh, Morrissey, Novis, René Storck, Currerr Bell, Furio, and Avelon. V Magazine recently spoke with Mac Folkes, the voice behind Downwit DeSlant on Facebook, about his elegant print publication also called Downwit DeSlant. Folkes’s outspoken endorsements delivered with a sharp tongue (e.g., “Politics have no relation to morals”) of a variety of cultural and political issues are a daily fixture on world’s most popular social network. Folkes explains in the interview the impetus behind Downwit and his future plans for it. [V Magazine]

El-P performed the song “Stay Down” from his forthcoming album Cancer 4 Cure (Fat Possum) on the Late Show with David Letterman (CBS) Tuesday night. Nick Diamonds from the group Islands lent vocal and synthesizer support for the performance. Between verses El-P paid respect to Adam Yauch and Maurice Sendak, both of whom died last week. Inga Eiriksdottir Co-Chairs Milk Gallery Exhibition The Wakhan Journey

Inga Eiriksdottir (Ford+) is co-chairing the photography exhibition The Wakhan Journey, which opens this Friday, May 18 at Milk at 450 West 15 Street in Chelsea. The exhibition includes photography, video art, an installation, as well as a mixed media documentary shot and produced by photographers Fabrice Nadjari and Cedric Houin (artistically known as Varial) during the pair’s 24-day walking journey through the Wakhan Valley, a narrow 140-mile long strip of land in northeastern Afghanistan bordering China, Tajikistan, and Pakistan. Childhood friends Nadjari and Varial were reintroduced to each other through mutual friend after falling out of touch for more than two decades. Fast forward to 2011, Nadjari and Varial resolved to travel to this remote region of Afghanistan to photograph the Kyrgyz and Wakhi tribespeople. One of the most intriguing aspects of The Wakhan Journey is how the subjects themselves responded to Polaroids taken by Varial and Nadjari, which often were the first pictures they had ever seen. The Wakhan Journey is an impressive exhibition of portraits from an equally fascinating trek through one of the very few regions in Afghanistan untouched by either the Taliban or NATO occupation.

Over the weekend the Independent devoted nearly 2800 words to Lanvin creative director Alber Elbaz on the occasion of the publication of the massive 688-page volume titled Alber Elbaz – Lanvin (Steidl/Dangin). A leisurely read about the man who over a decade dramatically turned around fortunes of a once languishing Lanvin is the perfect salve for an age of fast fashion, fast everything. [Independent]

The 65th Festival de Cannes opens tomorrow in France with a screening of filmmaker Wes Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. Vogue Italia previews the action set for the Croisette, which will be memorable if the festival’s official poster featuring Marilyn Monroe blowing out a candle on a birthday cake is any indication. Hannelore Knuts (Ford) features in Citizen K International Printemps 2012 in a story by photographer Grégory Derkenne. The editorial circularly titled “Less Is Less, More Is More” is premised on a maximalist conceit, which plays out to great effect over its 13 total looks. The story opens (Slide 1) buoyantly with a beaming Hannelore wearing a printed silk jacket and pleated silk crêpe trousers by Gucci, necklace by Ela Stone, cuffs by Hervé van der Straeten, and eyeglasses by Tom Ford. Turn the page (Slide 3), Hannelore holds her gaze wearing a jacket and blouse by Ba&Sh, necklace by Césarée, and eyeglasses by House of Harlow. Makeup by Tiina Roivaisen opts for a strong red lip, which complements the extensive eyewear accessorizing by stylist Benjamin Galopin throughout the story. The story concludes with a flourish (Slide 14) with Hannelore wearing a canary (a bright shade of the model’s favorite color yellow) wool jacket and pleated cotton jumpsuit by Paul & Joe, yellow ballerina slippers by Roger Vivier, necklace by Césarée, and bracelet by Marion Godart. Less is less, no question, but more is in fact Hannelore.

Bergdorf Goodman will celebrate its 111th anniversary this autumn and to mark the occasion the luxury goods department store is planning a series of special events that will kick off starting on Fashion Night’s Night Out, Thursday, September 6. A number of brands are creating special merchandise including amongst others Alexander McQueen, Christian Louboutin, Oscar de la Renta and Akris, and Maison Francis Kurkdjian who producing an exclusive perfume called 754. No Bergdorf celebration would be complete, however without windows, which will canvas the retailer’s history with an eye for the meticulous. [WWD]

Tomorrow Royal Mail of Great Britain will offer a special postage stamp series photographed by Sølve Sundsbø that pays tribute to the best of postwar British fashion. The first class stamps that retail for 60p a stamp will feature looks from Vivienne Westwood, Paul Smith, Alexander McQueen, and more. US Postal Service, take note, you can do better than this. The British are verifiably mad this year and for good reason…the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games at the time of writing are a mere 77 days from their opening ceremony. And the British aren’t the only nutters, nay. Magazines of all stripes have been celebrating, or rather whiling away the otherwise quiet summer months until the September issues with Olympian-themed editorials. Yesterday it was Matt Terry (Ford Men) reprising the 1936 games in Interview and today the task falls to Lara Mullen (Ford) in a lark of a British Vogue May 2012 story by photographer Tim Gutt. Acclaimed creative director and set designer Shona Heath creates an intriguing backdrop in pastels from cut paper with digital embellishments (courtesy of Touch Digital). Each of the story’s frames recreate a particular Olympic discipline from fencing to archery to springboard diving.

Lara opens the story (Slide 1) en garde wearing two looks in pale gray. On the left a satin jacket by Christopher Kane, an embroidered silk blouse by Just Cavalli, a cotton corset belt by Giles, cropped cotton trousers by Alexis Mabille, and shoes by Jimmy Choo. On the right, she wears a a sleeveless chiffon and grosgrain top, to order, by Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci, latex trousers by Kim West, and leather shoes also by Jimmy Choo. Turn the page (Slide 2) Lara is pictured leaping for the rings wearing a razor-sharp-pleat minidress in silk and cotton by Versus, a pair of patent leather shoes by Kurt Geiger, and a pair of fingerless gloves from Nina Peter. In the end Olympic madness is infectious, it must be said, and that Lara Mullen is its latest vessel of transmission is no surprise whatsoever.

Valentino was born on this day 80 years ago and to celebrate Vogue.it has paid tribute to the iconic octogenarian with a slide show retrospective. Although the Italian retired a few years ago his influence is still felt at the house he founded in Rome in 1957 now under the creative aegis of Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pier Paolo Piccioli. A true legend, Valentino established enduring relationships with Liz Taylor, Sofia Loren, Jacqueline Kennedy, and myriad influencers of their respective decades. Earlier in the week Valentino was pictured on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute’s spring gala alongside Sarah Jessica Parker. [Vogue.it]

Christian Louboutin is reportedly poised to enter the beauty market in a joint venture with New York-based Batallure Beauty LLC. Under the name Christian Louboutin Beauté, the newly formed company plans to introduce its first products for global sale in late 2013. “Beauty products also have to do with empowering women,” Louboutin said speaking to WWD. “That’s very much the job of the shoes I’m designing.” Exactly how the brand’s signature red sole will translate into the new products remains to be seen, but there is little doubt that the move will be well-heeled. Giorgio Armani has unveiled the Olympic kit he has designed for his native Italy. Fifteen Italian Olympians modeled the kit on a runway in Milan on Thursday. Armani joins Stella McCartney (Team GB) and Ralph Lauren (USA) as another of the major designers to create uniforms for the London 2012 Olympic Games. [Guardian.co.uk]
