Late last week Catherine McNeil (Ford) headed west in the pages of Vogue Paris, but today Kate King’s (Ford) journey on “The Road to Tijuana” in Vogue Japan March 2012 takes center stage. Shot by renown street photographer Tommy Ton, the story is somewhat of a departure from the colorful, textured close-up portraiture that is a fixture of the photographer’s body of work. The Aurora Sansone-styled looks that the Chloé Spring 2012 campaign model wears are mostly monochromatic (and especially black at that) with the odd neutral and white thrown in for good measure. It is the barren backdrop of the desert Southwest, however that provides an ideal complimentary frame so that, for example, the Missoni dress and Don Quijote boots of Kate’s first look are able to kick up considerable dust. Turn the page twice and swap yucca palms for palm trees, it is Kate taking the safari-inspired Michael Kors Spring 2012 collection at its word by wearing a knit poncho with fringe by the three times CFDA Fashion Awards winner and a pair of Frye Company cowboy boots. Once again, the West (by way of the Southwest) is the best as far as this story is concerned. Turn up the Mexican Radio, avoid the barbecued iguana, and with Kate King hit the road to Tijuana.
