Paris Haute Couture Spring 2012

The four-day tryst that was Haute Couture Spring 2012 came and went this week like an elaborately frocked lover in the night. The celebration of the highest fashion in the land however is more than mere aperitif to ready-to-wear’s main course that will begin serving in less than a fortnight in New York; couture is a feast unto itself! Leading the fête de la mode this week was Sigrid Agren (Ford), who walked for nine designers, nearly twice as next in line Antonia Wesseloh (Ford) and Erjona Ala (Ford), both of whom featured in five shows. Karmen Pedaru (Ford) turned up in style for Versace, Christian Dior, and Chanel. Elsewhere, opening honors were claimed by Antonia for the house of Giambattista Valli. Kate King (Ford) closed the Georges Hobeika show. Valerija Kelava (Ford) and Ana Claudia Michels (Ford), dangly nose-rings and all, were amongst a select few who presented the Givenchy couture collection by Riccardo Tisci. Karolina Wąż (Ford) made her couture debut for Chanel, which for a young model is no mean feat. That concludes the opening act of the womenswear calendar and of course will be followed a ready-to-wear show or two hundred beginning in New York next month. Myla Dalbesio (Ford+) spoke with Fashionista this week about her rising modeling career and emergence as a performance artist — that was Myla, fake tanner, stripper dollars, and all in T Magazine last August. At age 16 the Wisconsin native was first scouted by Jeff and Mary Clarke, the famed duo that discovered the likes of Karlie Kloss (Next) and Ashton Kutcher. Straight size modeling never really worked for Myla and after a couple years off she signed with Ford+. Fast forward to today, Myla is working and inspired like no other moment in her career. Francisco Lachowski (Ford Men) made an appearance in the latest Models.com MDX feature in a series of 35mm candids taken with disposable cameras model-turned-photographer Julian Shratter (Wilhelmina) dispensed to Chico and a handful of other boys during Milan Men’s Fashion Week this month. Fashion Delivers: The Pre Shows charitable event kicks off tonight at Sandbox Studios. A talented group of designers will showcase select looks for a full runway show featuring models provided by Ford. Man Vs. Machine, Karolina Zmarlak, and more will also perform. As a precursor to the ready-to-wear season that begins in a fortnight in New York, Erjona Ala (Ford) featured in five Couture Spring 2012 presentations in Paris this week including Chanel and Giambattista Valli amongst others. Erjona’s runway credentials were firmly established a season ago on the back of 64 shows and the model herself was widely hailed as one of the season’s breakout stars. Erjona is now beginning to translate her success on runway into print and to that end she can be seen in Vogue Deutsch Februar 2012 in story by photography duo Max von Gumppenberg and Patrick Bienert. Titled “Weiß wie Schwarz,” the Nicola Knels-styled story dispenses with all but the most essential elements and sticks with white on white combinations. Erjona’s first look, a white sports coat by Dolce & Gabbana and white cashmere turtleneck by Allude, set against a white background serves to amplify a strong red lip by makeup artist Mickael Noiselet. For her second look, Erjona wears a one-piece suit by Stella McCartney. The pair of portraits are a respectable showing and will no doubt be the first of many to come for the Erjona Ala.

Valentino Couture Spring 2012 hit the runway in resplendent style Wednesday evening in Paris. The illustrious collection in all its exacting, ultra-refined detail by designers Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri was aided in no small part by catwalk support from Sigrid Agren (Ford), Antonia Wesseloh (Ford), Hanne Gaby (Ford), Julia Nobis (Ford), Valerija Kelava (Ford), and Cora Emmanuel (Ford Women). Jean Paul Gaultier Couture Spring 2012 went for the full Amy Winehouse in heavy eyeliner, spiraling beehive wigs, and a runway swagger befitting of the late singer. Wednesday afternoon in Paris saw Sigrid Agren (Ford) and Alana Zimmer (Ford) present two and three looks respectively to a handful of hits by the five time Grammy Award winner. [WWD]

The Fashion Fund, a new six-part series chronicling the CFDA / Vogue Fashion Fund, premiered today on Hulu and Hulu Plus. The series provides viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the past year’s ten finalists and eventual winner, Joseph Altuzarra, as they all compete for top prize, major funding and mentorship with a top industry executive. Riccardo Tisci presented his Givenchy Couture Spring 2012 collection yesterday in Paris with a little help from Valerija Kelava (Ford) and Ana Claudia Michels (Ford). Tisci’s signature meticulousness was clearly evidenced by the painstaking arrangement of crystals, sequins, and even carefully numbered and reassembled crocodile scales in the collection’s ten ensembles. The collection is reported to have drawn inspiration from Fritz Lang’s Metropolis (1927) and Yakov Protazanov’s Aelita (1924), though little mention has been made of basketball as a leitmotif. Perhaps Tisci is simply excited for the return of the NBA. [Vogue]

Chanel Couture Spring 2012 got off the ground yesterday with an homage to air travel. Karl Lagerfeld modeled the runway after an airplane fuselage replete with 250 presumably luxury class seats. On the morning, Antonia Wesseloh, Karmen Pedaru, Sigrid Agren, Erjona Ala, Julia Nobis, Karolina Wąż, and Tao Okamoto (all Ford) all featured in the runway presentation. [Chanel]

Watch: Swarovski Film Premiere Anna Vs Anna

Anna Jagodzinska (Ford) stars in a new film titled Anna Vs Anna by Barnaby Roper that premiered Monday on Dazed Digital. The dramatic short feature produced exclusively for Swarovski pairs the Polish beauty with the Austrian luxury crystal maker’s elements and Keegan Singh-styled looks drawn from the archives of Rodarte. The science fiction film showcases two sides of the subject, light and dark, which when covered in Swarovski elements, the synthesis is undeniably Anna Jagodzinska through and through.

Paris Menswear Fall/Winter 2012-2013

The Paris Menswear Fall 2012 shows concluded Sunday evening with the Acne runway presentation at Garage Vaugirard in the 15th arrondissement. On the night Adrien Sahores (Ford Men) presented one look, a wispy cashmere sweater in electric vermillion, burgundy wool trousers, leather boots, and finished by a leather bag in cranberry. The look was a departure from the predominately black ensembles on display in Milan, but nevertheless rounded out Adrien’s six appearances in the French capital, which along with Douglas Neitzke (Ford Men) were the most of any model represented by Ford Men in New York. Zakaria Khiare (Ford Men) walked for five designers, the second-most numerous of Ford Men in Paris. Numbers aside, opening honors were claimed by Francisco Lachowski (Ford Men) and Linus Gustin (Ford Men) at John Galliano and Bill Tornade respectively. Tao Okamoto (Ford) sprang a surprise deep into the menswear season early Saturday evening by closing the Miharayasuhiro show. As you do, Tao! Giambattista Valli Couture Spring 2012 opened yesterday evening in Paris with Antonia Wesseloh (Ford) presenting the first look, a cream colored suit with ruffled shoulders and sleeves. The couture collection, Valli’s second such, as it turns out was also the first as a fully fledged member of the Paris Fédération Française de la Couture. Speaking of couture, Hanne Gaby (Ford) grabbed T Magazine‘s daily honor for her feature in their “Just One Look” series. On the day, the Belgian wore a look from the Bouchra Jarrar Couture Spring 2012 collection that Sally Singer of The New York Times described as a “snowy satin top with encrusted shoulders and a sinuous hem over her gray flannel spin on tux pants.” Erjona Ala (Ford), Julia Nobis (Ford), Brenda Kranz (Ford), and Cora Emmanuel (Ford Women) also featured. Céline will be downscaling its ready-to-wear presentation in Paris this March with creative director Phoebe Philo expecting her third child. Céline will retain its spot (March 4 at 1300 CET) on the fashion calendar, but as of yet has not determined what shape the show will take. [WWD]

This month Maryna Linchuk (Ford) enjoyed simultaneous Vogue covers (Japan and Spain) and this afternoon it is her Vogue España enero 2012 cover story by photographer Vincent Peters that is of particular interest. Titled “Siempre Grace,” or always grace en Español, Maryna turns back the decades on the thirtieth anniversary of the tragic automobile death of the Princess Grace of Monaco otherwise known as Hollywood actress Grace Kelly. To that end the Russian beauty opens the story looking back over her left shoulder wearing a blue organza dress by Dior, earrings with diamonds and emeralds by Chopard, diamond necklace by Tiffany & Co., and a diamond bracelet by Chaumet. The framing of the shot alone could be straight from Hitchcock’s Rear Window (1954), but Maryna’s femme fatale sultriness ensures the story’s celluloid tone firmly established from the offing. This glamorous thread runs throughout the story and is made to look especially effortless in the shot (#10 in the below slide show) where Maryna lounges on a sofa with her legs dangling over the arm rest. She is bathed in light perhaps from a film projector and wears a white and black dress, black leather heels, and holds a clutch, all by Lanvin. Over sixteen pages in length the cover story is a living testament to the memory of Grace Kelly and that Maryna Linchuk is the designated exponent of the late star’s elegance is no surprise whatsoever.

Versace opened the Couture Spring 2012 season this morning with Donatella Versace’s first such collection since 2004. Fifteen evening looks were presented at Beaux Arts in Paris by models including amongst others Karmen Pedaru (Ford), Sigrid Agren (Ford), and Kate King (Ford). In early afternoon Antonia Wesseloh (Ford) closed the Alexis Mabille presentation. [Vogue.co.uk]

Fashion’s Night Out 2012 has circled in red Thursday, September 6th as its big night of the year. With the Council of Fashion Designers of America having softened on its previously hardline “Second Thursday” position, New York Fashion Week was moved up a week so as to avoid conflict with Milan. The resulting change made Friday’s announcement by Fashion’s Night Out organizers all but inevitable. [The Cut]

KCD announced the launch of its new digital runway platform, which will allow invited users to view runway shows online. Think Tivo for the runway. [WWD]

Gustave Doré, nineteenth-century French artist, engraver, and illustrator, died on this day in 1883. Doré’s works famously illustrated the English Bible, Coleridge’s Rime of the Ancient Mariner, Milton’s Paradise Lost and more.
